A Recent Arrival Turns To Silver Halide Systems

The final presentation put everything into perspective as Ton Marsman, CEO of Webprint (www.webprint.nl) described the rapid growth of his online business. He first foray into digital printing was in 1993, and eventually he sold that business. In 2002, while running a restaurant, he was encouraged by friends to enter the photofinishing business. Doing some quick calculations, he figured that if he could capture just 2.5% of the entire 20 billion European photo print business, and make a profit of 1 eurocent on each print, the opportunity offered great potential. Initially, he selected a digital press to manufacture his prints. However, ”when 30-40% of all the pictures we sent to customers were returned because they expected a “photo”, I replaced this with a silver halide Agfa dLab-2 NetLab.”

Again, he precisely calculated how much profit he could make selling 4x6” prints directly to consumers at 9 eurocents, and concluded that this was a good business. Today, he sells these 4R prints at 5 eurocents each and emphatically stated that he is making money - and selling 150-200,000 prints/day. His company is growing at more than 200% every year. However, prints only represent 10-15% of his overall sales. The biggest market segment for Webprint is photocards, a product line he only introduced 3 years ago. Marsman estimates that in the Netherlands alone, 400 million cards are purchased every year. Other popular photo-related products include canvas prints and calendars. The calendars are produced on both digital presses and traditional photo systems, and each order includes a “pencil” so that consumers can write on the calendars. More calendars are sold that are produced on the photographic equipment than on the digital press, although the price for the latter is also more expensive.

At the time of his presentation, he was just completing the move into a new 10,000 m.2 facility, and was the first customer for the Imaging Solutions’ purePhoto integrated photobook/calendar system. There are also digital presses, a Durst Rho 700 inkjet systems, three Noritsu minilabs making special products (and available on a standby basis if needed) and a complete bindery.
Marsman considers Webprint to be a Web 2.0 company, and offers his customers free lifetime storage of their photo images. This year, that amounted to a storage requirement of 1 Terabyte every day, and next year he expects this to jump to 3 TB/day. Is this expensive? He commented that, on average, every picture stored is used three times.
He unabashedly discussed his company revenues. The first year, sales were €35,000 “and we lost money” and in 2005, sales of €50,000 also produced a loss. However, in 2006, with sales off €1.25 million, he broke even and in 2007 sales of €3.2 million produced a net profit of 12%. He foresees sales of €8-10 million in 2008 and €35 million in 2010, with an ambitious goal of reaching €500 million in 2015. And he is starting up in the U.S. with a presence in the Dallas area.
Throughout his presentation, Marsman commented that he was disappointed by the lack of promotion of photo products in the industry. He showed fascinating slides of some of the various products that he sells: wallpaper on photo paper (which is selling well); roller prints (also on photo paper); T-shirts and polo shirts; glass and plexiglass; wood - he showed a table top that had placemats with photos of each family member imaged at their “usual spot”; mirrors, name plates for doors and personalized books (with more text than photos).
